Reverse Engineered Object Progress: Week 4

Image
I had really hoped to get everything done by the end of this week, but unfortunately these final pieces are taking significantly longer than I thought. To start with I finished up the wingnut, which doesn't look correct at all, I focused way too much on using boolean tools and it made the whole thing very disagreeable. Time permitting I am going to revise or redo this one entirely I decided to drop the wingnut for a while as it was frustrating me to no end, and move on to these screw with the flat faces, they came together relatively quickly, I discovered working on these that sometimes if a boolean or some other tool is being disagreeable on a small scale, increasing the size of the object will often allow the various functions to go through, and then you simply shrink it back down to the size you need. To get the final detail of the transition of the screw threads into the head of the screw, which is not a dead stop, I created a little planar surface to shear off the e...

Reverse Engineered Object: Week 3

Image
This week I primarily tackled the base of the third hand, It looked very simple, but I was astonished by the amount of trouble it gave me, there was many subtle problems. The first I had to account for was that incredibly uneven texture, which meant I had to be very choosy about where I took my measurements to maintain accuracy to the overall form of the object. I started with a simple base made of squares and trimmed the unnecessary pieces, despite appearances, the object is not symmetrical, a good reminder to always double check every thing. the top of the object is slightly smaller, so I simply reameassure and then lofted the two together I constructed the upper piece separately, as I thought it would be easier to layout in 2D from the front view rather than the top view. I almost forgot that the backside of it was angled, so I quickly constructed a angled piece and boolean differenced the excess away Filleting the edges of this monster was an unbelievable nightmare, the en...

Reverse Engineered Object: Week 2

Image
So after measuring up my three objects, and learning that my mystery second object was an incomplete 'third hand', a tool used to hold objects while soldering (and borrowing a complete one, thanks Bryan) I decided to model the second object. I initially intended to start with the base of the object- but it has a mottled texture that makes it impossible to get consistent measurements, I was unsure what to do with that at the moment, so I decided to leave it be for the time I had to work on this, and move on to other pieces.   So I began on the central bar, pretty straightforward construction, I had difficulty measuring the small angled 'step', but the other parts were easy. My construction was a bit sloppy, and I did much more trimming than was  necessary as result, I'll need to improve that aspect of my work flow going forward. I also forgot the lathed out part in the center initially and had to go back to it, it also wasn't exactly centered,...

Reverse Engineered Object: Selection

Image
I was feeling rather indecisive about this project, obviously there was a lot of options to choose from, and no immediate choice came, so I poked around and picked three options that I thought could be fun The first option is maybe a more ambitious or hard mode option: the TRS-80 MC-10 a RadioShack (colour!) computer introduced in the 1980s, I tragically do not have any cords to plug it in and see if it still works (and I put the D key back in wrong after reassembling it) but it looks cool. Personally I love the chunky aesthetics of early home computers, the futuristic fonts, and the beige colouring, they're much more fun looking, though far less practical, than contemporary sleek future boxes, and often much easier to open up. This thing is mostly simple shapes, but there is very many of them, which makes me wary, no one aspect presents a significant challenge on it's own, but I think many little challenges can grow into a massive undertaking if you a...
